The History of Playing Cards

The history of card games is a long and very interesting one indeed. From their origins and their travels to the fame they have achieved, they have been a bigger part of history than you may realize. Although they can be found everywhere, as readily as any casino where playing roulette online is offered. There is some disagreement over the place and of the true origins of playing cards. Because paper was first invented in China, a large number of historians agree they must have been first made there. Documented evidence exists of “domino cards” being played around this part of the world. With the earliest reference to these cards stated Emperor Mu-Tsung was playing cards with his wife sitting on a balcony in 969 AD. But these domino cards had little in common with the cards which we have today.
Some sources will say that cards might have been first played somewhere in the Muslim world, being then introduced to Europe by travelers from that region. This would most likely have happened some time in the 1370s.
A host of the early literary references then to refer to card games being introduced to Europeans by ‘a Saracen’, or calling it ‘the Moorish Game’ and so forth. Etymological evidence may also suggest that Arabs introduced playing cards to Europe in the letter half of the 14th century.
Cards had established themselves by the late 1370s in most of Italy, and from there, spread out northeastward, into the rest of Europe. At this time, laws and ordinances were being posted against card playing, since it had become a popular form of gambling.
